Ken Tyrell established the Tyrell Racing Organisation in 1958 in an ex-military shed at his family timber business.
After 10 years running in various junior with drivers such as Jacky Ickx and John Surtees the team made the bold move into F1. The team started with a Matra with a talented young driver by the name of Jacky Stewart. As we all know they did rather well!
The team went on to major success including World Championships, all of which came out of the original modest shed until 1976. The famous six-wheeled car was also built there. Whilst the team moved the assembly to a new adjacent purpose-built factory, the old shed remained as a fabrication unit and later for storage. More recently the shed became derelict and was due to be demolished.
Fortunately, Goodwood came to the rescue and undertook the difficult task of moving the completer structure to the Goodwood Motor Circuit. This involved a huge amount of remedial work and dealing with all the necessary planning issues. The shed has now been available to be seen again by the public since the last Members’ Meeting.
We should all be very grateful to the Duke of Richmond for undertaking this task enabling us to enjoy a major piece of motor racing history.
